How to Be a Gentleman Burnoff Starts Tonight

The quickly-canceled CBS sitcom, How to Be a Gentleman, returns tonight for its summer burnoff.  The show premiered to a 2.7 rating (if I remember correctly) last September.  That would have been passable for any network except CBS.  It dropped to a 2.5 rating in its second episode and was exiled to Saturday.  In its Saturday premiere, How to Be a Gentleman could only manage an 0.7 rating and was even pulled from Saturdays.

Nine episodes were produced, so six still have to air.  CBS will show the first two tonight at 8:00 to 9:00.  The remaining four will air on Saturdays at 8:30 for the next four weeks.

Rules of Engagement Renewed for Season 7

Today, CBS renewed its utility player, Rules of Engagement, for a seventh season.  The show has always scored moderate, but good enough to survive, ratings for CBS.  In six seasons, this true utility player has only aired 87 episodes.

The renewal is for 13 episodes to be aired in 2013 (midseason).  This will bring Rules of Engagement to an even 100 episodes, possibly signifying a final season.  I can talk about renewal for 2013-14 later, though.

This ends the 2012 renewal and cancellation season.  Summer renewal and cancellation predictions will begin on Friday, June 8.

TV Renewals and Cancellations 2012-13

To note, I will be using TV By The Numbers criteria for an announcement- i.e. Pan Am was canceled by ABC when they announced the midseason schedule. This is the same as the 'Predictions' posts, but I have changed the name to hopefully increase pageviews. All data is as of 5:00 PM Eastern on May 24, 2012. There are a few changes today, in green type:
- The CSI pair did not go as expected.  CBS canceled Miami and renewed New York.
- CBS also canceled Unforgettable and NYC 22.
- Rob is also canceled.  Just Rules of Engagement remains in limbo.
- Celebrity Apprentice, Rock Center, Dateline renewed
- Biggest Loser and Off Their Rockers renewed for midseason
- Fear Factor (despite high ratings), Who Do You Think You Are, Sing Off, Escape Routes, and Who's Still Standing canceled.  Update: Escape Routes and Who's Still Standing are not canceled.  Since NBC's upfront has passed and they canceled so many reality shows, Who's Still STanding is on the bubble.  UPDATE 2: Escape Routes and Who's Still Standing are confirmed as canceled.
- FOX canceled Napoleon Dynamite.
- ABC renewed 20/20 and What Would You Do.  Wipeout will air this summer and may or may not be releagted to summers permanently.  Meanwhile, You Deserve It is canceled.
- FOX renewed COPS and American Idol, and it seemingly canceled Mobbed and Q'Viva The Chosen.
- CW canceled The LA Complex, but Season 2 will air in the summer as of July.
- CBS has renewed Rules of Engagement, ending renewal- cancellation season.  An anouncement on Wipeout, primarially a summer show, could come some time ths summer.

Nikita Renewed for Third Season

WHAT IS THE CW THINKING?  Nikita clearly did not have ratings worthy of a renewal, but it was renewed anyway.  This may mean that it could be here until 2014, because third-season shows are almost never canceled.

Anyway, this show has a rabid fan base.  Congratulations to the fans, but I am mad that a show that I had as a certain cancellation was renewed.

TV Renewal Chances for 2012-13

To note, I will be using TV By The Numbers criteria for an announcement- i.e. Pan Am was canceled by ABC when they announced the midseason schedule. This is the same as the 'Predictions' posts, but I have changed the name to hopefully increase pageviews. All data is as of 9:00 PM Eastern on May 11, 2012. There are a few changes tonight:
-Freshly Renewed: Whitney, The Office, Up All Night, Parks & Rec, Happy Endings, America's Funniest Home Videos, Wife Swap, Fashion Star
- Private Practice is now a likely renewal, no longer a certain one.  It is not going red, so I bolded it.
- My final renewal odds are included for all bubble and likely shows.  Certain designates above a 95%, and usually a 100%, chance.
-UPDATE: NBC canceled Awake; Are You There, Chelsea; and Bent
-UPDATE: Shocker!  The CW renewed Nikita.  They also renewed Hart of Dixie
- You can argue that it is wrong, but I forgot to update Harry's Law before.  It is now on the bubble with a 40% chance of renewal.  This is due to favorable rumors. UPDATE: 5:40 PM- Harry's Law is canceled.
- I am not actually moving The Secret Circle this late in the game, but it would go in likely cancellation, with a 10% chance of renewal. UPDATE: Or not, it too was renewed.  TV Line, which was cited in the TV By the Numbers comments, made a mistake.  Secret Circle is canceled.  That typo must feel awful to The Secret Circle's fans.   What the @#$%, now the mistake may have been a mistake.  This is just plain weird.  I am moving The Secret Circle to a category of its own.   The saga continues, as it is indeed canceled.Gossip Girl is also renewed for a final season.  How will The CW have room for all of this?
- The CW canceled something: Ringer.
- ABC renewed Scandal and canceled GCB.
- ABC canceled freshmen dramas The River and Missing.
- ABC renewed Don't Trust the B- in Apartment 23.  Is Last Man Standing about to follow?  No scripted shows remain as certain renewals.
- More ABC news: Body of Proof's comeback is complete.  It is renewed.  Also, Private Practice will be back next year.
- Many hours later, Last Man Standing is finally renewed.  Onto CBS whenever it is ready.

- I explained all of my changes earlier.  My explinations of those are lost, unfortunately.
- With all of NBC's short renewals, Up All Night could survive and is on the bubble.
- Even on CW, The LA Complex will not be back.  Certain Cancellation.
- Sources are saying that Nikita is all but dead.  It is a certain cancellation.

Will There Be a Second Season of Touch?

Touch had a special preview that led out of a 6.5 American Idol in January, and that got a 3.9 rating.  Its official premiere in March (out of only a 4.2 Idol) held up reasonably well, scoring a 3.3.  However, what has happened to so many FOX dramas this year also happened to Touch.  Two weeks later, it was down a full point to a 2.3 rating.  Recent episodes have been around a 2.0, or roughly half of the preview.  Terra Nova stabilized at around a 2.1 rating and was canceled; on the other hand, Touch's situation is different.  For one, it is airing in the viewing-depressed spring season.  But, the fact that Touch has about a 4.0 lead in from American Idol each week offsets the difference.  The biggest advantage that Touch has over the canceled Terra Nova is that Terra Nova was largely canceled due to obscenely high production costs, which Touch does not have.  This one is likely coming back, and has a 75% chance of renewal.

UPDATE: TOUCH WAS RENEWED FOR A SECOND SEASON JUST HOURS AFTER THIS WAS POSTED.

Law & Order: SVU Renewed for Season Fourteen

No surprise here, but NBC officially renewed Law & Order: SVU for a fourteenth season.  Some believe that it could be its final season, but I think that we will have to wait until next year to judge that.  Law & Order: SVU is now just six seasons away from tying its mothership (among others) for most seasons for a scripted primetime show ever.

Will There Be a Twenty-Fifth Season of Cops?

Cops is the longest running primetime entertainment program in terms of years and episodes aired, and is tied with Survivor for the most seasons aired.  Will FOX really cancel it?  In April, FOX decided to air sports on Saturday nights, replacing Cops.  In its final two episodes, Cops scored a 1.0, which is substantially worse than how sports has been doing.  However, the sports package s probably much more expensive to maintain than Cops is to produce.

An advantage that Cops has is that it has currently aired (more or less) 993 episodes, leaving it about seven episodes shy of the thousand mark.  I see FOX finding a place to at the very least get to 1,000 episodes.  However, I am not at all certain and will give Cops a 65% chance of renewal.

Tuesday, May 8, 2012

Will There Be a Second Season of Scandal?

Scandal premiered in April to a 2.0 rating.  That is an underwhelming, but given the time of year, not completely awful premiere.  According to Spotted Ratings (spottedratings.com), if renewed, Scandal would have the lowest premiere for a renewed scripted show on the Big Four ever.  Scandal, however, maintained that 2.0 for its first four weeks, before finally dropping to a 1.9 in its fifth week.  Given the present state of TV shows, Scandal, while not a hit, is a very good performer for ABC that seems to have a loyal fan base.  I am confident that Scandal will be renewed, and it has an 80% chance.

Will There Be a Sixth Season of Private Practice?

While many have hyped this as the end of Private Practice, I am confident that that is not the case.  While its ratings are not huge, they still are more than decent.  While it may have had a cushy timeslot for most of the season, the show managed to score well into the twos for all of its Thursday airings.  After a hiatus of approximately one month, ABC brought the show back n Tuesdays (where it could air next year) to just a 1.7 rating.  However, it rebounded to a 2.2 (against increased competition) in week two.  Private Practice, while declining, is still a solid player for ABC.  Next season may or may not be the last, but it will happen.  We can pretty much lock this one up- 95% chance.

Renewals and Cancellations- May 8

To note, I will be using TV By The Numbers criteria for an announcement- i.e. Pan Am was canceled by ABC when they announced the midseason schedule. This is the same as the 'Predictions' posts, but I have changed the name to hopefully increase pageviews. There are a few changes tonight:
- I forgot to put the canceled Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in last week.
- Hart of Dixie is now a bubble show.  I do not foolow the CW ratings as closely and misjudged that one.
- Whitney is not getting favorable rumors, and NBC is picking up a lot of comedies.  It is on the bubble.  Along similar line, Up All Night is a likely cancellation.
- ABC has soured on their pilots and still wants a lot of comedy.  Lat Man Standing is a likely renewal.  Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B... are certain renewals due to the pilot souring.
- I am of the belief that CBS will find a way to give CSI: Miami one final season.  It is a likely renewal.
- There are rumors that Gossip Girl and 30 Rock are all-but-picked-up for final seasons by their respective networks.  They are both certain renewals.
- NBC is not cancelling Parenthood, especially so close to syndication.  It was also, some weeks, their #1 drama.  It is now a certain renewal.
- After only scoring an 0.8 on Sunday, Harry's Law is now a certain cancellation.
- Now that ABC Studios is shopping Cougar Town to other networks, it is a certain cancellation.
- No way that ABC does not get a deal done for more Private Parctice.  It is now a certain renewal.
- All the stars have signed on for more The Voice and Two and a Half Men.  Some sites are reporting that NBC has renewed The Voice.  I will list them both as 'Already Renewed'.

Tim Allen's comedy, Last Man Standing, premiered very strongly to a 3.6 rating (and close to a 4.0 in the second half if I remember).  It maintained solid ratings throughout the season, stabilizing at a very respectable level of about a 2.5.  However, this show has suffered one of the greatest spring collapses in history.  In addition to the normal spring ratings carnage, ABC only aired this show once between February 28 and April 10.  Since then, this show has fallen from its early spring rating of about a 2.2 to about a 1.5.  Its first season finale airs tonight, and while ABC wants it to do as well as possible, tonight probably does not make much of a difference.

One thing working in Last Man Standing's favor is that ABC is not a huge fan of their comedy pilots, and they might want to start a comedy block on Fridays.  I recently downgraded this to the bubble, but on second thought, that was a mistake.  Last Man Standing will be fine, and has a 85% chance of returning.

Will There Be a Third Season of Body of Proof?

Body of Proof was renewed last year, possibly in order to renew one new drama.  However, it has no such luxuries this year, after a strong development slate; Revenge and Once Upon a Time are now bonafide hits.  Body of Proof underpreformed all season, albeit at 10:00 PM.  This one looked like a certain cancellation until it had a mysterious bump in its final episodes.  After limping in towards the finale in the low and middle ones, two of its final three episodes hit a 2.0.  If we are to judge based on its finish, Body of Proof should be back; however, its 'Body of Work' (get it) says that it should be canceled.  I would be surprised, but not shocked, if this one gets a third season.  Remember that a renewal is likely a two-year renewal due to syndication economics.  This one has a 25% chance.

Will There Be a Second Season of Up All Night?

Up All Night started with high ratings this year, scoring a 3.7 in the premiere.  However, that lead of the highly-rated season finale of America's Got Talent (4.1).  By the next week, facing off against the season premiere of Survivor, Up All Night dropped to a 2.4.  The ratings continued to drop, but it was given the better timeslot over Whitney at midseason.  From there, it was a disaster.  By the end of the season, it was getting crushed by Whitney, despite having all of the advantages.

I thought that they could renew this, but they are now just picking up too many comedy pilots.  Throughout the whole season, I thought that at least one of Whitney and UAN would be renewed, but that is no longer certain.  Up All Night will be moved to a likely cancellation in the next update, and has a 20% chance of renewal.

Will There Be a Second Season of Whitney?

Just to say, I planned to write a completely different piece about Whitney's chances.  Anyway, Whitney premiered to a 3.3 rating last September.  It dropped to about a 2.1 by late fall, and because of poor reviews, NBC tried to make it die by burning it off on Wednesdays at 8.  However, the show was resilient, and maintained decent ratings for NBC.  Sure, it would score about a 1.6, but that would frequently be good for the #3 scripted show (#2 comedy) on NBC.  However, NBC put a cheap offering, Off Their Rockers, into Whitney's time slot, and Rockers has preformed just as well as Whitney did.

Yesterday, I prepared to give Whitney about an 80% chance of renewal.  However, Deadline is claiming that Whitney is essentially dead, but that cannot be taken as pure fact.  I still think that NBC will need one returning multi-cam to put in a block.  If they renew a multi-cam, it would definitely be Whitney, but it is not looking so good.  Suddenly, Whitney has a 50% chance of renewal.

Will There Be a Second Season of GCB

I am going out of order now to try to capture GCB fans looking for their show's fate after last night's finale.  Prior to the season, I thought that GCB would be a lock to preform well and return.  However, that is not how the season went.  It premiered underwhelming to a 2.2 rating.  However, GCB was the rare new show that actually increased in week two.  The season averaged a 1.92 rating (using preliminary ratings from last night).  GCB had one anomaly rating of a 1.5, but other than that, it stabilized in the 1.7- 2.0 range.  This is a bonafide bubble show that I think could go either way.  If I had to guess, I would say that it will get the axe.  GCB has a 40% chance of renewal.

Will There Be a Seventh Season of 30 Rock

30 Rock has had borderline ratings for NBC all season, and could finish as NBC's lowest main comedy, even hitting a 1.2 once.  However, it is a veteran show with syndication value.  The show is also about the network, and everyone seems to think that it will get a final season next year.  I agree, thinking that this could be a similar situation to the renewed Fringe.  I give it a 75% chance of renewal.

Will There Be an Eighth Season of Fear Factor?

The case of the revived Fear Factor is probably one of the most intriguing bubble cases this year.  On the surface, it should be a slam-dunk renewal.  Its revival premiere averaged a 3.4 rating between the two episodes, and it never fell below the mid-2's in its normal Monday slot.  These ratings are well above NBC's average, it aired over the holidays, and it is cheap to produce.  Why would NBC even consider not renewing this?

I cannot give an answer, but they seem to not be satisfied.  Many episodes in January were bumped in favor of other events.  Only five of the scheduled eight episodes aired (and neither of the two hour ones).  One two hour episode eventually aired on a Sunday, coming in at a 1.5 rating.  One of the un-aired episodes is due to donkey semen-gate, but what about the other one?  Did the donkey semen incident really compel NBC to cancel this show?  I have no idea what will happen, so Fear Factor has a 50-50 shot in my books.

Where I Get My Ratings From

I thought that I should acknowledge my ratings sources, which I use interchangeably for most things.
http://www.spottedratings.com/
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/

When I use stats that would not be classified as 'common knowledge', I will give credit to the site that it came from, unless it is my on statistic.

Will There Be a Seventh Season of Rules of Engagement?

This spring, Rules of Engagement has been consistently scoring ratings of about 2.5 out of Big Bang Theory episodes, either in the 4's for originals or the 2's for repeats.  In the fall, its ratings were higher (in the 3's); however, TBBT would frequently hit a 5.0, and viewership levels were much higher.  It was a bubble show last year, but was renewed because Shit my Dad Says had a slightly lower rating than it did.  Now, compared to what CBS is airing during May Sweeps, ROE has the lowest rating of any comedy and is airing out of the highest-rated one.  However, Rules could actually finish this year slightly up when compared to last year.  Also working in its favor is the fact that CBS will probably expand their comedy time, because their comedies rate so much better than most of their dramas.  I think that Rules of Engagement will be back.  I will give it a 80% chance of returning.

Will There Be a Ninth Season of CSI: New York?

CSI: NY has always been the more lowly-rated spinoff of CSI, but has still had a solid run of eight seasons.  Last year, it was able to eek out a renewal on Friday nights.  This year, its ratings have dipped farther, and there is nowhere for it to go on a schedule.  There is no doubt that CSI: Miami has higher priority in scheduling, and thus renewals, than CSI: NY.  Its ratings are actually only slightly down compared to last year, and in the world of eroding TV ratings, that would seem to be a good thing for the show.  However, it probably did not deserve renewal last year, and there is definitely nowhere for it to go now.  This one is gone. 15% chance

Will There Be an Eleventh Season of CSI: Miami?

CSI: Miami has been around for a very long time, and was once a huge hit show.  However, its ratings have dropped sharply ever since its move to Sundays in the fall of 2010.  Contrast that with another veteran show that moved in the fall of 2010 after a long stay at its previous position, Survivor.  While Survivor's ratings have fallen somewhat, it is still a major player in the television landscape (after 24 seasons!).

Assuming that CBS decides to expand sitcom time, there will be nowhere on the schedule to put CSI: Miami, unless CBS decides to do something weird.  However, CSI: Miami is still good for about a 2.0 rating late on a Sunday night, in a position that is frequently delayed by sports.  I see the possibility that CBS will only premiere two new dramas and give CSI: Miami a timeslot in the fall.  I also think that they could put Miami on midseason duty.

Another factor helping CSI: Miami is that oddly worded syndication deal that it signed this year, which included seasons eleven and twelve.  I think that CBS will likely find a way to renew this one, and I give it a 75% chance at renewal.

Will There Be a Second Season of Rob?

Rob premiered very strongly this winter to a 4.1 rating; however, that was after a very strong 5.3 rating from The Big Bang Theory.  Throughout the season, Rob maintained very good ratings, averaging a 3.3 rating.  Rob only had one test out of a rerun of The Big Bang Theory, and it got a 2.6 rating (out of a 3.2 for TBBT).

Normally, this would be an obvious renewal, but that might not be the case here.  CBS has five comedies that will be back next year.  Assuming that they expand their sitcom time to four hours, they will have eight spots available for comedies.  They will premiere two new ones, leaving a spot for either Rob or Rules of Engagement.  I would think that Rules of Engagement would get the spot, because it has been getting similar ratings to the latter episodes of Rob, but out of a much weaker Big Bang Theory and in a viewing-depressed time of year.  Rules is also one episode short of syndication.

However, it would still make sense for CBS to renew Rob to help in midseason or the replace a flop.  Therefore, I will give Rob a 55% chance of renewal.

Will There Be Another Season of...

Starting now, for many bubble shows (and maybe some likely shows), I will do a detailed post explaining why a show will or will not be renewed.  I will conclude the post with the renewal odds.

TV Show Fates- May 5

To note, I will be using TV By The Numbers criteria for an announcement- i.e. Pan Am was canceled by ABC when they announced the midseason schedule.  This is the same as the 'Predictions' posts, but I have changed the name to hopefully increase pageviews.
There are a few changes tonight:
- I forgot to put Shark Tank in last week. It is a certain renewal.
- I forgot to put Q'Viva The Chosen in last time.  It is a certain cancellation.
- Missing, after only tying a CW offering, is now a certain cancellation.
- When I think more about it, there is no way that I see this summer being Wipeout's swan song.  It is now a certain renewal.
- What Would You Do, which shot up to a 1.4 rating last night, is also a certain renewal.
- Touch has stabilized at about a 2.0, which is not great given the circumstance; however, it should be enough for renewal, and Touch is now a likely renewal

Predictions- May 3

To note, I will be using TV By The Numbers criteria for an announcement- i.e. Pan Am was canceled by ABC when they announced the midseason schedule.

There are a few changes tonight:
- Scandal, after another 2.0 against increased competition, is a likely renewal.
- Last Man Standing is swooning down the stretch and has been downgraded to the bubble.
- All of The CW's Certain Renewals were officially renewed.
- The LA Complex has been renewed in Canada, so the chance remains for the CW to air future seasons in the summers.  Thus, I have upgraded it to a likely cancellation.
- I forgot to put The Bachelor in last weekend.  It is a certain renewal.
- Castle, after a very strong outing on Monday, is now a certain renewal.
